More to come on Thursday’s exhibition opening…
Day 3: human rights, bioplastic and dubstep
Thank you to Melanie Berner, Südwind for the presentation highlighting human rights issues in the garment industry. The ‘statue theatre’ allowed us to get a first person perspective of all the lives involved in the production line. If you work in a school we thoroughly recommend to book the clean clothes campaign workshop.
After some discussions about up-cycling we finally started getting our hands dirty in four practical workshops. The bio plastic workshop got pretty messy!
Another big thanks to Stefanie Schöffman who delivered some great tips on how to design a professional grade exhibition.
We are continuing to sketch an outline of our upcoming event, It will be a real challenge to include everyone’s varied ideas and expectations.
Hard work means fun
We have survived the intensive sessions of 2nd day- impressive facts about the climate change, consumption-victims and cultural shocks.
The day started in the harmonically designed lendloft with questions like “what is fashion for you?” or “what do you want to change on earth?” and from that point our mind had no rest till the late evening.
After creating, interpretating and discussing self-generated fashion profiles we had to acknowledge the fact that every single group was deeply influenced by stereotypes or at least had lots of fun to freely guess and decode the visual stimuli. so that was our first common practical exercise.
This day brought us diverse information about topics like climate change, human rights, consumption and eco-sustainability – fascinating lectures and intensive discussions. we had guests:
Martin Fuchs of the “klimabündnis” educated the group about such issues as sun energy in our bodies, the chaotic weather system and the sustainability of the capitalistic system. at least we know now that “not everything that comes from the government is good”. In the afternoon fashion designer Bettina Reichl introduced with company “verpackungszentrum graz” and the eco-sustainability packagings they produce. By the way, did you know that there is completely bio-degradable house in upper austria?
After dreaming the first time about our exhibition we enjoyed the multi-cultural evening with wonderful traditional clothes and food. Such discoveries as typical Berlin backlava is typical german, Swedish saris appeared. And yes, Spanish traditional dress is nothing more than underwear?
Summing up the day: some people loved the shiny black hempstone, some loved to be a toaster, an elephant or a washing machine and some people just loved watching participants dancing macarena! (“I was young and needed the money”)

Tuesday and Wednesday this week offered some fun and hard work with all groups leaders involved in earth.re.create’s international workshop about the connection between fashion, sustainability, human rights and climate change on the 3rd to 12th of August in Graz, Austria.
This was the first time all of us met and we’ve now spent two intense days getting to know each other and preparing the workshop. We’ve now set the detailed program and most participants have been selected and notified whether they have been selected or not.
We would really like to thank all of you who applied and showed interest in the workshop. We really appreciate you taking your time to apply! If you belong to the group of people who we unfortunately cannot invite to join us this time, please keep us in mind for future projects. There will be more chances to get to know us and we’re always open for listening to your ideas for achieving real change within fashion and sustainable development! Bring it on :)
The next chance to get to know us is of course the opening of the mobile exhibition which the participants of the workshop will produce. Hope to see you in fashionLAB, 19:00 on the 12th of August!
